Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, with friends like these, the Night's Watch doesn't need enemies.
This week, we:
- Theorize about Val's role in the story
- Introduce Craster and his nightmarish prison factory of a Keep
- Introduce Gilly, and watch as her peril unravels the Watch's self-justifications
- Dig into the complex, opaque dialogue between Jon and LC Mormont at chapter's end
- Make explicit all that's implied about Craster's deal with the Others
Next week: we head back to the Iron Islands as Theon meets the girl of his dreams, only to find out too late that a) she's his sister b) she's the heir and c) he's a chump.

I've seen more evil done in the name of "God" in my life than for any kind of pointy-eared bad guy with a pitchfork. Only greed and nationalism come close. If Christianity was ASOIAF, the Long Night would create Azor Ahai without its own knowledge, to protect Westeros from the Long Night itself, and then the Long Night would torture and kill itself as a threat to any Westerosi who don't o wy, without any promise of help in this life and without any requirement of the follower except obedience.
