Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!

Today, Emmett and Jeff are joined AGAIN by ASOIAF mystic and mythical astronomer: Lucifer Means Lightbringer, AKA LML. He joins the boys today in doing the deep-dive into Daenerys Targaryen's third chapter.

Fair warning: there is discussion about rape and sexual assault in this episode.

I'm not so sure if we are supposed to interpret Drogo's actions as such a straightforward case of rape. I mostly think this because Dany is thankful for having the pillow there to cover her tears and, presumably, to muffle her cries as well meaning Dany does not want Drogo to be aware of her displeasure or to view it as nonconsensual. This is most likely due to her being afraid of Viserys finding out and retaliating against her. This would also explain why she continues viewing Drogo in a favorable light and why immediately after retaliating against Viserys she takes steps to change that aspect of their sexual relationship.
