Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter (though not in this case) podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, Arya Stark wanders the war-torn Riverlands with her new companions: kids who try to rob her, adults who threaten to kill her, and her guardian Yoren, who beats her. It’s...it’s just so much fun to make new friends.
This week, we:
- Wonder whether Jon will adopt his mother's heraldry when he learns the truth
- Frame Arya as the "underfoot" POV among the smallfolk suffering under the clashing kings
- Talk about how George gradually paces his reveal of The War in all its horror
- Dig into Yoren of the Night's Watch as a figure of ambiguity and tragedy
- Munch popcorn as the downtrodden stand up to their oppressors...albeit only briefly, because this is ASOIAF and we can't have nice things for long
Next week: King Joffrey Baratheon (or so he calls himself) celebrates the unfortunate fact that he has survived another year in Sansa I!

Episode 74: A CLASH OF KINGS, PROLOGUE: “Red, Part 2″
Monday Aug 12, 2019
Monday Aug 12, 2019
Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, STANNIS the objectively rightful King of Westeros and his morally unambiguous sorceress begin their crusade to set the world to rights. We foresee no complications whatsoever.
This week, we:
- Talk about the choice of introducing Stannis and Melisandre through Cressen's POV instead of Davos
- Attempt and ABSOLUTELY SUCCEED in re-evaluating Stannis against the memes and preconceived notions
- Set Stannis's characterization against what Robert, Renly and Westeros believe about him
- Re-evaluate Selyse and offer a more sympathetic picture of Queen Selyse while also looking askance at her fanaticism.
- Define Melisandre and her purpose in the story, analyzing her in the context of magic and magic
- Talk about Stannis burning Shireen in the context of the books and show.
Next week we're on the road for ACOK, Arya I, Arya II and Arya III! All Arya, all the time!

Episode 73: A CLASH OF KINGS, PROLOGUE: "Red, Part 1"
Monday Aug 05, 2019
Monday Aug 05, 2019
Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, Maester Cressen stares down a giant Eye of Sauron in the sky above Dragonstone before meeting with his king...and the latter will be covered next week, as part of "Red, Part 2." Don't blame us, the chapter is 10,000 pages long!!
This week, we:
-Consider why George has been stingy on Stannis-Shireen moments so far relative to the show
-Give a quick overview of A Clash of Kings as we shift from book one of ASOIAF to book two
-Set up the dynamic between the secular and sorcerous that will dominate the book
-Talk about the siege of Storm's End and how it works as a foundation for Stannis' character
-Ask the most important question of all: what's up with Patchface?
Next week: Red, Part 2, introducing His Grace Stannis Baratheon, First of His Name. At long last.

Episode 72: A GAME OF THRONES, DAENERYS X: "Bride of Fire"
Monday Jul 22, 2019
Monday Jul 22, 2019
Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, an exiled widowed teenager stranded in the wasteland is reborn as the Mother of Dragons. Now that’s how you end a book.
This week, we:
- Frame the dragonbirth as as religious experience, not only for the characters but for us, the audience
- Break down the chapter's structure in terms of what Dany is planning v. what George reveals to us
- Discuss how Dany's character arc and the larger forces of destiny beautifully harmonize
- Praise Dany's politics (for now) as she takes command of the khalasar in the name of equality and transformation
- Try and fail to explain the magic at work in Drogo's funeral pyre
Next week: no regular episode, but our $5+ patrons will get our look back in AGOT--what we liked, what we didn't, what we learned. In two weeks, the normal cast resumes with the Prologue to A Clash of Kings. Thanks and love to everyone who's listened throughout book one!!

Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!
In this episode, the vassals of Winterfell and Riverrun come together to declare with one voice that Robb Stark is the King in the North! King in the North! KING IN THE NOOOOORTH!
This week, we:
- Reminisce a bit on AGOT and what we're looking forward to in ACOK
- Reflect on the key changes between this chapter and events from the Thrones Show
- The War Shit: It's battle analysis of the Battle of the Camps!
- Catelyn's grief and pride intermingling as Robb Stark enters Riverrun
- It's council time in which Renly Baratheon is thrown a lot of shade
- THE KING IN THE NORTH
- Was Northern independence/independence a good thing? Was it justified? We DISCUSS!
Next week: The final chapter in AGOT: Daenerys X, in which the last dragon brings back the real dragons in the defining act of magic in ASOIAF.
